The Loss Prevention Certification Board’s LPS 1175 standard has become the most widely recognised standard for evaluating resistance to unauthorised access offered by physical security products. The standard categorises eight grades of security based on the tools and time a criminal is likely to use. Specifiers can then select products/systems that provide security levels that match their needs.

The methods of attack, the duration of the attack, and the tools employed increase significantly depending on the required security rating. For example, LPS 1175: Issue 8 Security Rating D10 (SR4), designed to replicate experienced attempts at forced entry into high-risk commercial premises, could include tools such as a grinder, sledgehammer, steel wedge, bolt cutter, and Halligan bar with a maximum test working time of 10 minutes. It is also important to note the accreditation issue number, as the standard is regularly updated to account for new attack methods and tools becoming readily available.
